Our music critic calls Soulja Boy on the carpet.
One of the biggest songs in the country last year was an inane, sex-chant-infused Southern rap called "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," by young Soulja Boy Tell Em, from tiny Batesville, Mississippi, population 7,113. Soulja Boy Tell Em turned 18 this summer and is looking forward to voting for the first time. His monster hit song included repeated assertions of a cartoonishly absurd sex act: supermanning, or as he elaborated repeatedly in the song, "Superman that ho," which means to come on a woman's back and then put a sheet over her so it sticks to her back and she looks like she’s wearing a cape. Ridiculous stuff. He also chants repeatedly, "Supersoak that ho,” the meaning of which needs no explanation, given the neighborhood we're already in.
These are ludicrous suggestions that play into the Cro-Magnon conception of men using sex and sperm to attack and slay women. It's such a mean-spirited vision of sex that every time I heard the record I thought, I bet that before this came out, he was a virgin.
I asked him, “What historical figure do you most hate?” He said, "Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa.”
Last week in Atlanta, I got to interview Soulja Boy Tell Em. I found out just how young he really is. He was one of about ten rappers I interviewed in one day for my BET show, The Black Carpet. I decided it'd be fun to give all the rappers part of the Proust questionnaire. I thought it'd be a way to get beyond image and into who they really are. Most of the guys gave good, thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive answers. I asked Juelz Santana, “How would you like to die?” He said, "Loved."
Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, “What historical figure do you most hate?” He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa."
My jaw, at this point, was on the ground."We wouldn't be here," he continued, having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."
Wow. Never mind that diamonds come from Africa. Never mind that there were many generations of pain in between leaving Africa and getting diamonds. Never mind that the long-term cataclysmic effects of subtracting about tens of millions of young, strong people from Africa over the course of a couple of centuries is a large part of the reason why Africa now appears so distasteful to you. Never mind all that, Soulja Boy. You put country first.

ITS OBVIOUS THAT SOULJA BOY IS IGNORANT ABOUT ALOT OF THINGS THAT HE SHOULDN'T BE IGNORANT ABOUT... BUT THIS IS NOT SURPRISING BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE TO BE SO SMART TO BECOME PART OF THE HIP HOP WORLD.SOULJA BOY WAS MADE, THIS NOT ONLY SHOW THAT HE IS PLAYING A ROLE BUT WHAT LEVEL OF EDUCATION HE HAS.
Along with single-handedly DESTROYING hip-hop, he says ignorant nonsense like thiss? Woow.
Omg! After reading this i got so pissed but then i laughed. what's to be expected of the hip-hop world today. Hip-hop today is so different from how it was back in the day. Its filled with a bunch of fakes and idiots who rap about nonscense.
I FEEL THAT SOULJA BOY IS WAT HIS NAME REPRESENTS HES A "BOY" AND DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. HOW COULD HE SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT THE COMMENT THAT HE MADE COULD RUIN HIS CAREER AS A RAP ARTIST. SOMEONE NEEDS TO SIT HIM AND TEACH HIM ABOUT HISTORY AND HOW AFRICAN AMERICANS STRUGGLE TO BE WERE WE ARE AT NOW. SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE HIS MASTER AND GIVE HIM A LITTLE TASTE OF HIM OWN MEDICINE.
OMG!!! THATS EXACTLY WHY HE'S A RAPPER AND NOT SOMEBODY IMPORTANT THAT HAD TO GET AN EDUCATION TO GET ALL HE OWN MONEY... HE MAKES ALL RAPPERS SEEM IGNORANT EVEN IF SOME RAPPERS MAKE SENSE WENT THEY RAP.... AND WHEN THINGS LIKE THIS ARE SAID WHEN BY TODAYS NEW SO CALL RAPPERS THE SAY THE HIP HOP IS DEAD MAY BE TRUE........
solja boy has made young people look bad! he definitly mad ehimself look uneducated, ignorant and stupid. to have said this is to have put a title on him as someone who doesnt look at the books, who doesnt know the stories. he's done the wrong move of making that shout out and he has sent out the wrong message: theat the struggles that black people was all for the bling bling. that the blood, sweat and tears that was seen through those times as working toward getting tatoos. he needs to drop the mic and pick up a book!!
This is what makes me a shame ofbeing black. He did not answer the qustion that was asked of him. Instead he gave a idoit response. He just proof the white man in society right. How can a person forget about the horrific history of our ancestor. He spoke upon the materialistic things. His values are all screwed up. He needs to go back to school. He is the typically black man. He is a walking dumby.
As Letoya said earlier, Soulja Boy is a BOY! So in most of what he says doesn't make too much sense. He's a boy having fun behind a microphone. He should be further educated about black history; you could see he's misinforming other children (real immature teens) about our ancestors. What Soulja Boy portraits is an ignorant mislead teen who expresses that little portion he learned in tutoring or school. In other words, I'm not really mad at him. He's an ignorant little boy. He doesn't know much/better. Its his fault he doesn't know (he should be paying attention in class), but that's what happens when you give an academically challenged boy money.
SOULJA BOY IS SHOWING THE WORLD HOW IGNORANT HE CAN BE....IT'S NOT SURPRISING BECAUSE HE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THE HIP HOP WORLD WHO IS IGNORANT....
In a way im not surprise at all however i am dissappointed that a black man who is not educated about his individual heritage who has the resources to be.. SOULJA BOY can say "superman that hoe" but can't know that diamonds come from Afica or even that in many parts of Africa it's a tradition to have your tribe tatooed on you.. He not only makes himself look ignorant but us as black people; he's a disgrace to our race!!
ok dudes i dont like hiphop and i think it sucks, but what soulja dude said was out of line sence he is black he is just being a jerk. but hey a douch will be a douch no matter what.
man sooulja boy dont no nothing about nothing. he should have stayed in school a lil longer b4 droppin out cuz wat he said wuz real stupid... and thats jus makinwhite ppl have more to say about blacks... his music aint even good 4 him to be makin any comments at all...
Well we shouldnt be surprised that Soulja Boy would even say something like this; he never had any sort of credibility, and his poor talent in music allowed us to see this wayyyyy ahead of the time. He's just another reason on why Hip-Hop/Rap is slowly dying and why we need more Nas's to help revive it. I never baught his album, I will admit that I made a mix to his song [[but only because it sounded great with the T.I. beat]] but other than that, bleh. Can't pay any mind to idiots.
P.S.
No wonder he got so many F's on his report card :D

Soulja Boy I guess just doesn't fully understand life and it's meaning. He is still young and therefore it's not really his fault he just doesn't know any better. Now I'm not making any excuses for him he still should've known better. Also he probably thought that was a funny thing to say. But hey that just goes to show how stupid he can be.
Come on you can't blame that boy for saying that. We all know he didn't graduate high sckool and if he did, he ain't pay attention in class. that's sad that soulja boy is one of the faces of hip-hop because with that statement, he practically tried to stab it with a sharp ass knife. and i didn't even know what "superman that hoe" meant. I'm so glad i wasn't apart that dancing crap. Fool sad.
Souljah Boy has a lot of influence on today's young culture and he doesn't realize what kind of power he has. He could have said something more intelligent instead of talking about chains and other materialistic objects. He was being very ignorant towards the subject. His answer probably disgusted everyone but him. He is a bad role model to today's youth.
This is why we need Marvin Gaye!!!
